Instructions
1. Cook the Noodles
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the egg noodles according to the package directions until tender.
Drain well and set aside.
2. Cook the Cabbage and Onion
Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
Add the chopped onion and cook for 5–7 minutes, until softened and lightly golden.
Add the cabbage, salt, pepper, and paprika. Stir well to combine.
3. Slowly Caramelize the Cabbage
Cook the cabbage over medium-low heat for approximately 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
The cabbage will soften and gradually develop golden-brown edges. If the pan becomes too dry, add a small splash of water.
For extra traditional flavor, add the caraway seeds during cooking.
4. Combine With the Noodles
Add the cooked egg noodles to the cabbage mixture.
Toss everything together gently and cook for another 3–5 minutes, allowing the noodles to absorb the buttery cabbage flavors.
Taste and adjust the salt and pepper.
5. Serve
Transfer the Hungarian Haluski to a serving dish and sprinkle with fresh parsley.
Serve warm as a satisfying main dish or as a side alongside roasted meats, sausages, or other Hungarian specialties.
Tips for the Best Haluski
- Don’t rush the cabbage. Slow cooking gives it a deeper, sweeter flavor.
- Egg noodles work especially well because they are tender and absorb the buttery cabbage mixture.
- Hungarian paprika adds warmth and color without making the dish spicy.
- A little caraway gives the dish a classic Eastern European flavor.
- For a richer version, add another tablespoon of butter just before serving.
